We had a great Zoom meeting on May 31 with Sara McFadden, who is running for Florida House District 106, which includes most of Naples west of Livingston, plus most of south Naples. Sara was a gun sense candidate in 2018 and she has earned this tremendous distinction again in 2020! Unfortunately, Representative Bob Rommel was invited to join this forum and declined to attend.
In 2018, more than 2,900 people were shot and killed with a gun in the state of Florida, which is an increase of 20% from 2014, and the numbers get worse every year. It is clear that our current representatives in Tallahassee are failing to adequately address this issue, with predictable and tragic results.
Here is a quick summary of where Sara McFadden and her opponent stand on the most important gun safety issues in Florida:
MCFADDEN: Opposed to arming teachers and supports law enforcement as the only appropriate school safety personnel to carry firearms in public schools.
ROMMEL: Voted in favor of arming teachers in 2019, despite local opposition to the measure.
Stand Your Ground:
MCFADDEN: Will vote to repeal stand your ground, which has been associated with a 32% increase in the firearm homicide rate in Florida. This is a matter of public safety.
ROMMEL: Voted in favor of expanding stand your ground, effectively forcing the state to prove its case against an accused shooter twice, once in front of a judge and once in front of a jury. This vote ignored the racially discriminatory impact of stand your ground laws on people of color in our community.
MCFADDEN: Supports legislation to require a background check on every gun sale, including gun shows and online sales.
ROMMEL: Has failed to act on background checks for 4 years, despite overwhelming public support and compelling evidence that it would save lives.
Red Flags Laws:
MCFADDEN: Supports red flag law, which permits law enforcement to seek a court order to temporarily remove firearms from people who are a danger to themselves or others. Supports expanding this law to allow family members to petition the court for these risk protection orders as well as law enforcement, which is important particularly in domestic violence cases.
ROMMEL: Supported the Parkland bill, but unknown position on expanding red flag laws to include family members.
We are excited to support Sara McFadden as the only gun sense candidate in the race for Florida House District 106! You can find out more on her website at saramcfadden.com.
